oh sorry ~the above didn't quite read right. That was
the question posed to our doc. We did subsequently
try ADD meds and she has done really good
but the root cause of the ADD appears to be
auditory processing.
sorry

Thanks Jodie. This really isn't my area of specialty. I would see a Doctor or specialist to get more information on medication and treatments. Thanks so much for you comment and good luck!

We acquired a teenaged cousin to our familiy approx
2 years ago. She came to us with vague desciption of "learning disorder". After failing 2 hearing screenings at school, she was referred to an audiologist. Her auditory anatomy, so to speak, was cleared but audiologist made reference that she was "malingering". She does have a complex social situation so I was perplexed, wondering 'why would she pretend not to hear?'. The audiologist briefing noted as we were walking out, "Now, I wasn't checking auditory processing", quite rudely. As a Physical Therapist, my clinical brain started turning and I asked our doc for more testing. But, in the meantime, do you think ADD meds would help her focus more in school. It was a kinda unofficial clinical trial, but she has been able to maintain in regular education classroom versus her special Ed curriculumshe was in when she came to us.
Will be interested in more auditory processing resources!

Thanks for the link! I will check it out. I'm not an expert on ADHD but have heard that it can be misdiagnosed.

Your blog makes some excellent points. The scenarios you describe are certainly plausible, but I do think there are some instances where ADHD-like symptoms (that may be diagnosed as ADHD) could just be something as simple as a lack of iron causing irritability, hyperactivity, and learning impairment.

If you're interested in the subject, I definitely recommend this article on iron deficiency by Dr. Richard Kunin.
