I couldn't agree more TwinToddlersDad. Determining which tool to use when is not always easy and definitely requires a good understanding of your child. And even then, you won't always get it right! It's all part of the everyday challenges of parenting.

Great ideas! I have tried some of them with my son recently with great success. Hugs, kisses and a backrub works great especially at bed time when the twins are tired and cranky.

Just as rewarding the child with his favorite snack or treat is a tool in a parent's tool box, distraction is another useful tool. Your ideas can be very useful in simply diverting the attention in another direction. The trick is to know when to use these tools! And that is the hard part. Just as you cannot fix everything with a hammer, you need different tools for different jobs. Getting a good sense of your child's rhythm, behaviors and preferences can help you determine which tool to use!
There is no right or wrong answer of course.

This is wonderful advice! I love all your ideas and will absolutely share this with my clients with your permission. I am equally committed to giving parents and children tools that will change their idea of "reward", and put in place ways to calm the mind without reaching for food. We personally find peace in our own home with music, coloring, reading and watching Animal Planet!
