Maryann,
Love this tip for parents. We all need to do a better job at deflecting the "what" to feed/eat and focus on the "how" to feed/eat. Children are "pure eaters"--they focus on their internal cues and freely leave food on the plate. Parents can easily mess with this innate regulation...it is easy to do! From pushing your baby to finish that jar of baby food to forcing your child to clean his plate in order to receive dessert--this "rules about eating" approach is pervasive in our parenting culture and will be a continuous obstacle in getting children to be self-regulated eaters. Thanks for writing about this important topic.

I just wanted to say how much I really enjoy reading your blog. I myself do not have children, but plan to in the next couple of years. As someone who at some point lost all sense of appropriate amounts of food, whether it was too much or too little, I really worry about the message I will send my children some day. I'm working on myself right now and hope I can use the things I learn from your parenting experiences to raise healthy eaters myself. Thank you for your insight.
