Cookbook Giveaway: SOS! The Six O’Clock Scramble to the Rescue

Okay, it’s time to reveal the new cookbook I’ve been raving about. Just so you know, I’m usually not a big cookbook person. I still buy them from time to time but I’m usually disappointed when the touted quick and easy recipes are really more involved and time-consuming.

This is one of the reasons I love SOS! The Six O’Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families Cookbook. Many of the meals are Scramble Express meaning they can be made in 30 minutes or less. And Aviva Goldfarb, the author and busy mom, denotes the meals that can be made ahead of time or frozen.

For some reason, I find the meals in SOS especially appealing. I’ve already tried the Ravioli, Spinach with Sun Dried Tomatoes and the Crispy Parmesan-Panko Crusted Chicken Cutlets. I can’t wait to make the Orzo Salad with Peas and Feta Cheese and the Mango and Black Bean Salad to use as sides for some upcoming BBQs.

I also love the structure of the book. Golfarb, who runs The Scramble Meal Planning System, provides weekly menu plans and recipes based on what’s in season. The beginning of the book contains a seasonal fruit and veggie guide and other helpful suggestions like how to stock your pantry (wasn’t I just talking about this?).

I also really, really, really appreciate having the suggested sides which includes easy and nutritious salad and veggie ideas. Each section of the cookbook has tips for families including school lunch ideas, easy composting for families, best dishes for school potlucks and much more.

The only thing that’s missing from this cookbook are pictures but I can live without that. It really is an amazing resource for busy families. It’s a must-have book for every family’s kitchen!

Because the nice folks at the Six O’Clock Scramble sent me two books, I’m going to give one away for free! Here’s what you have to do to enter the cookbook giveaway:

1) Leave a comment saying why you need more quick and healthy meal ideas.

2) For another entry, sign up for Raise Healthy Eaters’ email updates or RSS Feed. If you already subscribe, tell at least one friend about Raise Healthy Eaters. Leave another comment saying what you did.

3) To increase your chances further, become a facebook fan. If you are already a fan (now called like), suggest some of your friends become fans. Leave another comment saying what you did.

4) And for a bonus entry, tweet, blog or share this post on Facebook. Again, let me know you did it by leaving another comment.

This giveaway will end next Friday the 4th at midnight. The winner will be picked at random.org. Good luck!

I really need this book … I’m struggling in this area. I have a 4 year old and two 3 year olds and a plethora of “I don’t like that” comments at meal time. I’d like to say they all come from my kids but hubby joins along in the chorus … although he is much nicer about it.

I’m already a follower and subscriber … Can I get a second entry because your button is featured prominently on my blog?

Katie May 28, 2010 at 6:27 am

I really need this book because I don’t have tons of time to spend planning healthy meals for my kids. I really want then to eat a balanced healthy meal each night, it’s makes me feel great when they eat this way. I know how important it is for them.

I cannot agree w/you more on this book, Maryann. I became a huge fan of Aviva’s when I stumbled across her recipe newsletter back in 2006 when I was developing LEAN Families at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. I had over 30 dietitians testing her recipes for several weeks and the overriding comments were that the meals were amazing and very easy! I use them for my family and recommend her newsletter and both books in my pediatric dietetic practice. Even if you don’t win the books, I highly recommend the purchase. And this Raise Healthy Eaters blog is one of the best family nutrition blogs out there so make sure you’re plugged in. As a a pediatric dietitian, I am very happy to have found it and enjoy reading Maryann’s posts – excellent resource. Happy Eating!!

(Don’t worry about putting me in the running for these books, just wanted to give my support)

I could really use some creative recipes to encourage my son to eat some veggies. And I love to be able to put dinner together in a hurry. Thank you for the giveaway!

Also, I subscribe via Google Reader, and I tell my mom friends about your blog!

I would love the cookbook!!

Maureen May 28, 2010 at 8:07 am

This would be great for my sister who has three boys 5 4 and 17 months. They are all going in different directions and the two younger ones are picky eaters. They all want something different and this book looks like it would help keep dinner time down to a soft bark instead of the roar it is going at.

Angela B. May 28, 2010 at 8:07 am

This is a must have in my household, when the kids think going out is the norm instead of eating in I really need to make some changes. I am one that does not like cooking and am quite picky myself when it comes to eating so having a cookbook that makes it quick and healthy and hopefully happy kids I am all over it. Please please pick my family to receive this wonderful resource.

I really need this book. I’m a mom of a thirteen year old, and a nine MONTH old. Between shuffling my big one to different events and chasing after a crawler, I just don’t have time to make healthy meals. When I do cook at home, it’s quick like fried chicken cutlets or hot dogs. HELP!!

Ruby May 28, 2010 at 8:15 am

I’ve only recently stumbled on your website and have become a fan. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for all your good ideas.

I already love the original SOS. I would really like to give this one to a good friend who is due with her first baby this summer. It might be hard to part with though!

Heather Shannon May 28, 2010 at 8:30 am

Oh this would be so helpful. I have heard of this cookbook, but haven’t purchased it. My 3 year old is so picky and it seems most nights I end up making her something different than what we eat. I

I need this book for new cooking ideas for my family. Our daughter just became old enough to eat with the family and I’m already running short on ideas for what to make. I’m not very talented in the kitchen so I need the help of a good cookbook!

I am a working mom of 2-year-old twins and a 4-year-old singleton. I can use any help I can get to make dinner better, faster, and more appealing to them.

Betta May 28, 2010 at 8:55 am

I just became a ‘fan’ on facebook!

I work nights so our biggest meal is lunchtime. Hubby needs help in the dinner dept. Our varied work schedules make family dinners a rarity, so the healthier they can be, the better. Thanks! thebubbledies(at)gmail(dot)com

I would love this book–my partner and I are both working students, so time is always tight. But we love to cook together so new recipe ideas would be wonderful. Thanks for the giveaway!

Hannah May 28, 2010 at 9:25 am

With working during the day and a husband in night school, dinner can get stressful. On school nights, we have an hour to make and eat dinner.

Morgan May 28, 2010 at 10:24 am

Now that my son is eating table foods, I need more recipes we can all enjoy. Thanks!

Morgan May 28, 2010 at 10:25 am

I subscribed through my Google reader.

Amy May 28, 2010 at 10:58 am

Another busy, exhausted mom who could definitely use help with healthy quick dinners for my family!!

Cathy Cunningham May 28, 2010 at 11:21 am

I really need this cookbook! I’m a cancer surviving grandma who works full time and feeds 3 people daily, and more on the weekends. I don’t have the time or patience or ENERGY to cook much. We’ve been eating way too much take home pizza! Help!

Leslie May 28, 2010 at 11:36 am

The six o’clock scramble is my “go-to” cookbook so I would love to try the new recipes! I planning for a summer at home with three year old twins and a six year old and we are on the move! I need new ideas to get us through our busy summer. Thanks for the giveaway.

Meg May 28, 2010 at 11:53 am

Oh boy, how do I not need a new cookbook! I have a healthy, strong 2 year old who isn’t too keen on eating healthy meals or anything milk related. I am also a boring old broiled chicken/fish and steamed veggie eater who is trying to reform meals in our family for everyone, including myself. I definitely don’t have many cooking skills, nor do I have much time so a cookbook like this is much needed!

Meg May 28, 2010 at 11:53 am

I am already a subscriber, but I sent an email blast to other friends that are moms to have them check out your blog!

Meg May 28, 2010 at 11:54 am

Meg May 28, 2010 at 11:55 am

Oops, the previous post I meant to say I suggested ALL of my FB friends like the webpage. However, this is to serve as a separate entry, I did share the post on FB too!

Nina May 28, 2010 at 12:17 pm

The time I start to cook each day seems to be the exact time my 4-yr-old and 3-yr-old lose patience with each other and need the most supervision. The less time I spend on the food, the more time I’ll be able to spend with them!

Melanie May 28, 2010 at 3:19 pm

I am another working mom with a very picky eater. Cooking and eating dinner is very stressful for me and I would love to have some help. This cookbook looks terrific.

Erin Easter May 28, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Working mom with a new baby, and I am struggling to come up with quick, healthy meals that my toddler will eat. I reposted this and suggested your blog on my Facebook as well.

Kristi May 28, 2010 at 8:42 pm

This book looks like a great resource for my family. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and we need to venture beyond mac & cheese and chicken dinosaurs!

Tina S. May 28, 2010 at 9:39 pm

With 2 busy teenagers and a toddler quick meals are a must have!

We’d love to win this, we’ve mostly caught on to the cooking/menu planning thing but due to a sudden change with my father’s health and the 4 children at home, most of our meals have turned into Trader Joe’s frozen meals.

aimee guest May 28, 2010 at 11:50 pm

I’ve been an email subscriber for a little while and I’ll be passing your blog along to my friend who’s a nutritionist who has ironically had great struggles with eat and her young daughter and has had to use eating therapy to help her.

jenny May 29, 2010 at 4:04 am

As a mom of two teenagers- this book would be perfect for nights when they have to help my husband cook dinner- My hubby is not too keen on the cooking and often forgets the healthy sides so having it be easy and quick and sides printed out would be a perfect!

Tricia May 29, 2010 at 8:17 am

As a busy working mother of 2 very active growing boys, dinner is a nightmare at our house. We are always in a hurry and I constantly feel pressured to find something that is both good for them and something they with both eat. I could really use this book for more quick, healthy ideas.

Megan K. May 29, 2010 at 1:44 pm

I really need this book! I’m struggling coming up with healthy recipes that my 2 and 5 yr old will eat.
