Big A loves Rice Krispies Treats. I remember after having her first one at a friend’s house, she came home declaring they were the best thing ever.

I made the regular version, with marshmallows and Rice Krispies, for her end-of-the soccer party but recently decided to try a somewhat healthier version — one with brown rice and sunflower seed butter and honey.

The trick is finding the brown rice crispy cereal — both Attune Foods and Nature’s Path have a great product. I adapted this recipe from Attune Foods but when I went to link to it was gone. And while Big A didn’t love them with the same fever, she said they would do. And I thought they turned out really good (although a bit sticky).

Does anyone make something like this?

Brown Crispy Rice Treats
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
  • ½ cup honey
  • ½ cup peanut butter or nut/seed butter of choice (I used sunflower seed butter)
  • 2 cups crispy brown rice cereal
  1. Place the honey and nut butter in a sauce pan over medium heat and mix until heated up, smoother and combined (do not cook). When done, set pan aside and add cereal and mix with a spatula. Press mixture in a 8X8 pan coated with cooking spray, or a 9X13 pan leaving room at the end. Let cool and cut into squares. Serve them the same day or freeze.

I just had the same experience with my 4 year old discovering Rice Krispie Treats. I tried out a recipe at Attune Foods and tweaked it a bit.

Giada has a recipe for these Chocolate Cranberry Treats. Its a different method, but tasty and good for GF folks. It uses honey as sweetener.
It is worth looking up
